Works by important American modernists in the Barnes are reminders that the Foundation served a large number of homegrown artists during the first half of the 20th century. By focusing on the work of black artists like Horace Pippin and Sargent Johnson, and queer white artists like Charles Demuth and Marsden Hartley, this workshop examines the impact of both Dr. Barnes and the Foundation on the development of "alternative" modernisms during the first four decades of the 20th century.
