Albert Barnes recognized certain artists' work and value before many of his peers. When he showcased his collection at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1923, the Philadelphia art establishment reviewed it as radical and even vulgar. This course considers how America has been introduced to avant-garde practice and work by foreign artists, and how exhibitions have caused "the shock of the new."
