The still life was the least-admired subject for French academic painters, but became a powerful focus for impressionist and post-impressionist artists, particularly Cézanne. He used objects from his native Provence to construct innovative compositions that broke from Renaissance traditions of volume and space. His comment that he would "astonish Paris with an apple" signaled his bravura. The return to still life as a highly regarded art form in the 20th century hinged largely on Cézanne's work and legacy.
