Paul Gaugin’s excursions to Martinique and Polynesia, Henri Matisse’s time in Morocco, and numerous artists’ appropriation of motifs from Africa and other “exotic” societies they encountered are testimony to the inspiration that many European artists found in foreign cultures. Was this a quest for new visual forms or a response to rapid change in Western artistic centers? This course offers a discussion of the forces at play as the modern era emerged, and the shift from impressionism to the innovations of key artists in the Barnes collection.
