Cézanne’s immense contribution to the art of the twentieth century emerges from, as he would say, “his temperament before the motif.” This four-week seminar will survey the principal works of Paul Cézanne in the Barnes collection. In addition, his seminar will examine Cézanne’s compelling challenge and enduring inspiration for other artists, including Braque, Picasso and Matisse. Participants will view and discuss painting central to Cézanne’s development including one of his earliest landscapes from the 1860s as well as his 1870s Bathers at Rest, the great landscape of Gardanne, his numerous still life’s, the Card Players and the monumental Bathers of 1906.
