This seminar will introduce participants to the paintings of Adolphe Monticelli (1824-1886), an acquaintance of both Cézanne and van Gogh. Scholars have reported on van Gogh’s homage to Monticelli, and Cézanne painted beside Monticelli in the landscape near Aix. Each of these men were artists who liked to innovate with the plastic, physical qualities of paint. This seminar looks at their technical practices and the possibility of shared influences.
